I’ve been thinking lately about the title of this blog.  If you haven’t stumbled upon the explanation for it, or you just don’t know, I took the title from the Adrienne Rich poem “Final Notations” which is why it is a tab up there above my title header.

I think the poem is a good description for life and that one of life’s truths is that it takes us to places we never planned.  When I was younger, I don’t think I quite envisioned my life the way it has turned out.  Even when I pictured myself in Chicago, it was under very different circumstances.

But life is unpredictable, and I think that’s a good thing, overall.  This blog, for going on two years, has been an exploration of the places I never planned.  It got me wondering.  So I’m asking you.  Leave a comment or maybe even post on your own blog.  What are some of the “places never planned” in your life?

I’m still kicking around the idea of a hiatus.  But the past two days, I couldn’t help but feel a little renewed that September is over and October has begun.  Don’t get me wrong, September had its moments, like the trip to Denver, and meeting my niece, or having my little nephew declare “Auntie Sare-uhl is funny!”  Yet it had other moments.  Moments I know won’t repeat themselves in October.  And that’s enough to lift my spirits just a bit.

Despite my plans, I’ve remained rather quiet of late.  I’m trying to sort a lot of things out, personally, professionally.  And for some reason, even though this blog used to be a tool for that sorting, it somehow isn’t serving that purpose any more.  So, some days I think of taking a break.  Going on hiatus if you will.  Given my activity lately, I’m pretty much halfway there.

With a lot of things lately, I’m confused and uncertain.  Do I want to leave Chicago or not?  Where would I go?  Why have some things turned out one way and others completely different?  Am I just bored?  Do I need a vacation?  And to top it off: why? why? why?  Lots of why.  And one more thing I just don’t know right now: to blog or not to blog.  That is the quesiton.  Bear with me while I find the answer.

My heart hurts.

I feel stupid and hurt and used and just all around crappy.

Once again, thank you to everyone for all your sympathy and well wishes on my grandma. We’re doing ok with it so far. She had a good, long life. It’s hard to argue with that. I think the most ironic thing is that while she is the grandparent I held onto for the longest, her husband, my grandfather, died when I was just a baby. I have no memories of him. I never knew him, even though he, in some small way, knew me. It’s weird for me now, to be grandparentless, and even according to the federal government, partially orphaned (I am classified as the orphan of a veteran, but so far it hasn’t resulted in anything).

But anyway, the real reason I want to post is because amidst the downs of losing my grandmother, I’ve found reasons to smile. Comfort from people, laughter from friends, distractions at work, contact with my family, little kindnesses along the way. So I want to send a big thank you to the universe and anyone who has brought a smile to my face in any way.

Thursday night, I fly to Minnesota. Then we make the long drive to Lake of the Woods County. This is where I’ll be Friday night through Sunday. In case you thought I was exaggerating with how far north it is, now you see. It’s not far from the Northwest Angle, the little stick-up part of Minnesota that is as far north as you can be in the lower 48 states.  I’ve been there and the only way you can even drive there is to go through Manitoba. Why is this just not part of Canada, you ask? I don’t know. What do I look like, a map-maker/decider of boundaries between the US and Canada?

Anyway, I saw a little game on someone’s blog–I apologize but I can’t remember whose. Me and Not me. Thought I’d play. I think you’ll get the gist.

So this weekend the moving commences. Actually the moving commenced Thursday night. Which, by the way, when you move out, clean the apartment. I say with all due respect to the girl who jut vacated mine. Because having a pet bunny in a Chicago apartment is odd enough, but leaving behind little bunny-nugget presents for the next tenant, well that’s just gross.

Anyway, since I am going to be cleaning and painting and moving and unpacking and shopping–also since I won’t have internet until Monday afternoon at which time I also get cable with my beloved DVR, cause I have got to see the Lost finale when it’s on even though it will undoubtedly leave me going “What?”–y’all are getting some filler post to keep you entertained until my triumphant return. It will be triumphant. I will conquer the bunny droppings.

So, one of my favorite games–addressing the search terms that bring people here.

“roadtrip goody bags for boyfriends” What? Honey, I can think of a few goodies your boyfriend might like on a roadtrip, but I don’t think they need to be put in a bag. If you know what I’m saying.

“movies called all grown up and oh my momOk, so I thought I was understanding that one until like the third or fourth word. I don’t even know…

the airheaded cheerleader” I beg your pardon?

“cheryl” … “wino” Damn skippy!

“What do you think it will be like tomorrow?” I’m hoping warm and dry. Anything to make the move easier.

“chest shave” and “tied” Sounds like someone has some really interesting hobbies. I’m not sure I understand how that led here, and I am not sure I want to know.

“why would blood come out my mouth” Because you bit your tongue really hard? Lost a tooth? Maybe you should seek medical attention?

“sibley warriors soccer” If they’re anything like they were when I was there, they kick ass. I have to say that, what with being a cheerleader and all…

And, my other favorite game…iPod Shuffle. Wherein I list the first 10 songs my iPod plays on shuffle. Except this time, to make it more entertaining, and because this game inevitably gets people wondering about some of the songs they might not be familiar with, click below on  “pop out player,” then the launch player link, to hear them.  And you can take them with you because it has its own window!

Oh, and? I want you to play to. You can leave your list in the comments. Hint, hint. It’ll give me something to look forward to. You know you want to…

1. “In Between Days,” The Cure

2. “Ooh La,” The Kooks

3. “Henrietta,” The Fratellis

4. “Run,” Snow Patrol

5. “Brothers on a Hotel Bed,” Death Cab for Cutie

6. “Home,” Foo Fighters

7. “Times Like These,” Foo Fighters

8. “She Moves In Her Own Way,” The Kooks

9. “You’re All I Have,” Snow Patrol

10. “Have a Nice Day,” Stereophonics

Hmmm, there are three repeat artists there. I swear my iPod is actually fairly diverse. That is the thing about leaving it all to the shuffle gods I guess.

And finally, many congrats to blogger Bev, who welcomed her daughter into the world last week! Feliticaciones!
