(Note: No, I don’t root, root, root for the White Sox. Unless I’m root, root, rooting for them to lose. I’d really rather die a painful death than root for them.)
Nothing will make you feel more like summer is truly on the way more than a good baseball game. Actually, a good baseball game in warm weather might. Alas, we don’t choose the weather, it chooses us. And last night cold and wind chose us. Someone also chose the seats in the 500 section in the second to the top row, which meant extra wind. But this is Chicago. We take our wind in stride.
Baseball lover that I am, my first game of 2008 deserves note. And it was a good game. I went with Bluebird, Sixth Degree and Sixth Degree’s Boyfriend because the Nameless Initialless One couldn’t go. When the Cubs scored six runs in the first inning, it was a sign of: a good, high-scoring game and a long one at that.
The Brewers had many fans there. Including one who, for some reason, felt the need to stand up every time he bought a beer from the vendor. I don’t really know if that’s how they do it in Wisconsin or what. Bluebird later informed me that the same Brewers fan seemed confounded on the whole ordering a hot dog process at the concession stand. Um, ok.
Another fan (maybe it was Cubs fan, I’m not sure) stood up in the top of the third inning and announced to her friend/mother/sister/whatever that she was going to go find a Miller Lite. To which Bluebird and I laughed. There is only one way to get a MIller Lite at Wrigley Field. Pay attention. Go down the the ground lever. Turn towards the gates. Walk out of them. Head to the corner of Addison and Clark. Cross one street, then the other. You are now standing in front of The Cubby Bear. Go inside. Order a Miller Lite. Do not return to the park. You can’t. Variations of this, of course would be to go to Sports Corner, Bar Louie, Harry Carray’s or any other bar in the Wrigleyville neighborhood. The girl in front of us returned two innings later, as the fifth inning was progressing, sans beer.
Golden moment of the night came when Sixth Degree’s Boyfriend say “I think Soto is overdue for a 3-run homer.” As he had hit one earlier in the game I said “Yeah, he hasn’t had one for like three innings!” At which point, Soto promptly (seriously, the words were barely out of my mouth) hit another 3-run homer. And Bluebird and I asked Sixth Degree’s Boyfriend to tell our fortunes.
The Cubs won. They ended April well. We’ll see what the season holds for them. Oh, and my beloved Twins won too. It was a good day for baseball all around. Wait…did the Yankees lose? Yes they did. Like I said, a good day all around ![]()
I went to both Twins games against the White Sux this week…and Boy did the hometown boys look FANTASTIC!
When I was channel surfing last night, I came across the Cubbies game, and was blown away by the score! Congrats on the win….
I’m off to go and find myself a Miller Lite…left, then right…then left?

‘Nuff said.
It would be so nice if they could make it to the world series this year. Last year was such a bummer
GO CARDINALS!!!
Cubs vs Cards this weekend in STL!
Sounds like fun! I have no idea when it comes to baseball (but I know it’s similar to rounders ;)), but the evening sounds like fun!

Is there anything better than baseball? No, no there isn’t.
what a superb game! i don’t follow baseball, really, but i DO love going to see games in person. and that sounds like the ultimate time to have at a game
Yes, a day at the ballpark sounds just lovely.
I am going to my first game in July, and I am pretty stoked. I hear Wrigley field has quite the atmosphere!
Trying to get a Miller at Wrigley. Priceless.
Thought I’d drop by and say hi to a fellow Chicago blogger. I found you via Nilsa’s blog!
