I’ve always liked mail. It’s something that seems to have run in my family. One of my dad’s first questions when he’d come home each day was “Any mail?” My sister and I would wait for the mail man to come and dart outside to grab envelopes filled with letters, magazines, catalogs, and bills. But as a child, who cares about those?
These days, one of the things that makes me smile most in my mailbox is a bright red envelope. “Hooray” I silently exclaim, as I clutch my Netflix envelope and head up to my apartment.
I get three movies at a time, and sometimes, I tend to hold them hostage. Timing means I can’t always get around to watching a movie. Sometimes I move through the TV shows faster. Even though they have more content, it’s much easier to watch 45 minutes here and there than sit down for a two hour movie.
When that happens, and I finally find time to watch a movie, I vow to watch it and drop in in the mail first thing the next morning. That’s what I did last night as I settled in to watch “Once,” which has patiently say next to my TV for weeks.
I didn’t return it this morning. Because I just have to watch it again. And more importantly, I have to download the soundtrack tonight. It’s a good movie with great music, and if it doesn’t win the Oscar for best song on Sunday, well then there is something (else) wrong with the world.
This weekend, I liked Juno. But what set Once apart for me was this. It stayed with me. That’s how I’ve always marked a good movie, or song, or piece of art. It stays with you. It almost haunts you, lingering in your thoughts. Something about these characters and the situations just feels right. Today, the music is still with me. And so is that red envelope.
Oh I miss American movies, too!
I love Once! The premise is so simple, the two main characters are so unadorned, yet you get to feel such a wide range of emotions as you follow their footsteps along the working class Dublin neighborhoods. And even though it’s a musical, the singing is so natural you don’t question it when it occurs. This movie makes me want to go stand at a street corner and sing a duet with a stranger.
I really enjoyed the music in Once. I hope they win for best song.
you’re the second person to write about this movie today! GAAHH! must watch it immediately!
Hmmm…. you’ve peaked my curiosity.. not just about “Once” but about Netflix.
I saw Once because two galpals wanted to see it. I grumbled. I moaned. And then I realized it was a lovely little film. One that deserved to be seen.
a) 3 at a time? I was all proud of myself for having TWO to return today! I’m impressed!
b) I own Once and I still get chills every time the first scene at the music shop comes on. They’re just REAL. Sound Opinions (NPR) did a great interview with the duo a few weeks ago and you can get it the podcast off their website!
c) I love mail too. And I bet we both subscribe to the opinion that almost everyone loves to get a real piece of mail. I’m keeping Greer in business.
i have the same behavior with my netflix arrivals. i get 2 at a time and definitely move through the tv shows faster. but i love returning them asap so i can get my next movies.
i also had once at my house this weekend, but as i mentioned, i was kind of bored by it. so i am in the minority on this movie in the blogosphere apparently.
i also had gone baby gone. loved it.
It was such a beautiful movie. I am really glad that you liked it so much, just proves that you are a good person. LOL The music is brilliant and the people, well god they are so real.
Mail is nice when its not bills! I’m so out of touch with movies but I’ll have to track this down at some point.
On Saturday night, you said one of the reasons you got into blogging is because you enjoy writing. Well, this post is it! Great writing, my friend. You are also the third person this week to blog about Once. Might be time to check it out myself! Do you think Sweets will like it, too?
Getting stuff in the mail does rock, unless it’s those annoying inserts. I think this is why I like getting email so much.
I haven’t seen the movie Once, but I might have to based on the praise you bestowed upon it. Juno was a good movie, so if it’s better than Juno… it must be seen.
I did like Once. It took me like 30 minutes to get into it, though. We’ve been playing the soundtrack at work, it’s pretty good.
I loved Once. I own the DVD and the soundtrack.
I’m so glad the strike is off so that Glen and Marketa can perform Falling Slowly at the Oscars!
I recently got Netflix. I’m on a one-at-a-time deal (I never used to watch movies at all, so it’s enough for me). I love it. Genius service.
thanks for stopping by! you already know my thoughts on this one. still have the soundtrack on repeat. in fact, i’m listening to it. right now. haha.
I want to work for the post office someday, because I like mail that much.
Oh man, I NEED to see that movie. Need need need. I’ve been obsessed with the music since August (I have a very strong personal association with the song “Falling Slowly”) and still haven’t seen the damn film.
I’m so glad you saw and loved it! Maybe they’ll do another tour and you can catch them live – they’re amazing!!!
